The Stage 3 Fire-ED Up is a program developed by Central Coast Council in collaboration with Central Coast Academy of STEM Excellence (CCASE) and Rumbalara Environmental Education Centre (EEC).
Recently winning the 2023 Local Government Excellence Awards for Community Development Population over 150,000, Stage 3 Fire-ED Up was developed to build resilience in young people by providing opportunities to increase bushfire knowledge with the aim to improve wellbeing.
The Stage 3 Fire-Ed Up program engages school-aged children (grades 5-6) through a cross-curricula focus on science, technology (Earth and Space), geography (Factors that Shape Places) and mathematics outcomes. By incorporating the iSTEM process, students develop critical and creative thinking skills while solving real-world problems. The program aims to reduce anxiety during high-risk bushfire seasons by using education to prepare students, families, and the community. Participating schools receive professional learning and ongoing support from the Central Coast Academy of STEM Excellence.
All necessary equipment for practical activities is loaned to Central Coast Schools with the option of an incursion supported by Rumbalara Environmental Education Centre, who is happy to accommodate school needs and practical activities.
An additional and optional excursion – in partnership with Central Coast Council and the Rural Fire Service, Rumbalara can facilitate an exciting excursion with participating schools at Kincumba Mountain (or similar). Throughout the day, students will participate in practical Fire-ED Up activities, as well as learning from Rural Fire Service volunteers about their fire trucks and equipment. Learn more here.
The Central Coast Council, the Central Coast Academy of STEM Excellence (CCASE), and the Rumbalara Environmental Education Centre (EEC) are thrilled that the Stage 3 program will now be reaching a broader student audience as it extends into high school environments. This program is made possible thanks to the support from the Office of the Chief Scientist and Engineer, which will be implemented by the Hunter Innovation and Science Hub.
In addition to this, all three organisations enthusiastically express their delight in collaborating with the team from the Hunter Innovation and Science Hub. We are looking forward to leveraging our collective expertise and resources to further develop and enhance the program, ensuring a beneficial and impactful learning experience for the students.
